The review of the repository for spent nuclear fuel continues in the Environmental Court

On January 2022, the Swedish government gave the so-called admissibility according to the Environmental Code for the repository for spent nuclear fuel at the Forsmark nuclear power plant and an encapsulation facility at the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant. This meant that the environmental review continues in the Land and Environmental Court to also obtain a licence for the facilities with associated conditions. This is necessary to allow the start of construction.

On June 30, 2023, the nuclear waste company SKB submitted a license request with proposed conditions. On August 15, the court announced the request and comments could be submitted during the fall. The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, SSNC, the Swedish Friends of the Earth, and the Swedish NGO Office for Nuclear Waste Review , MKG, submitted a common opinion on October 26.

On December 19 the company submitted a response to the comments. On December 21, 2023, the court sent out a notification and gave the opposing parties until February 14, 2024 to submit an opinion on the treatment.

The main hearing in April, and it is planned for May 20-24, 2024. If the schedule is kept, the court can issue a ruling in June-August 2024.
